Sustainability

Sustainability is built into everything we do—from designing durable workwear to taking responsibility for our impact. Through long‑lasting products, transparency and action, we work to reduce our footprint and drive real change.

Because tomorrow matters

Working on sustainability in an unsustainable industry

A growing population. Joint and limited resources. This gives us a clear responsibility to work every day for future generations to contribute to a circular economy and consumption that keeps resources within society's cycle instead of becoming waste.

Sustainability the blåkläder way

This is our sustainability page, where we like to geek out about absolutely everything to do with being sustainable. Or as we tend to think of it – doing our job.

Blåkläder's sustainability report

Our ethos

NO, NO, NO, YES.

Striving for sustainability is hard work, with big challenges and tough decisions. For every yes there’s a thousand noes. We do that hard work for our customers. We try, fail and learn, we make the hard choices and the unpopular decisions. We say no – so you don’t have to.

Blaklader is a family-owned company and we have always cared for it – and everybody who works with it, like we would any other member of our family. With lots of love, high expectations, and the support needed to reach its full potential. But most of all we want it to be a healthy company, strong and full of self-esteem – tough enough to say no. Today and tomorrow.

For three generations we have been going our own way – and out of our way to build long-term responsibility and durability into every single link of our value chain, and in every little detail of our product. We believe that being a sustainable company is not something we are, or are not. It’s a relentless process of always optimizing our business for the better of the people, the planet and the profit.

We say no to over-consumption of bad workwear. We say no to short-term gains, hasty decisions, temporary solutions and crazy quick fixes. We say yes to long-lasting products, relationships and partnerships. For us, it’s the only sustainable way forward.

We say no to a lot of things. Say thank you later.

OUR GREEN FACTORIES

Sustainability lies in Blåkläder’s DNA. Which is why we are particularly proud that our factory in Myanmar has been awarded LEED Platinum status. This is the highest classification in the LEED Green Building Certification for environmentally sustainable buildings. This represents a major success for our present and future sustainability activities.

WE’RE IN THIS FOR THE LONG RUN

As well as being a prerequisite of all human existence, the sun is an almost endless source of energy that has little environmental impact. With solar panels, water-cooled air conditioning and water-saving measures, we are taking a responsible, long-term approach to garment production and its impact on the environment.

Short and efficient supplier chain

We keep the number of partners in our supply chain to a minimum. We believe that the key to profoundly sustainable work in a supply chain is close relationships with all suppliers. A limited number of carefully selected suppliers is the basis for high transparency in a supply chain. The total Blaklader supplier base is less than 100 partners. In our industry, it is not unusual for companies to have 5-10 times that many. From our point of view, this is the only right way to do it.

Quality

At Blåkläder, we know that the most important parameter for reducing our carbon footprint is that our workwear be used as much, and for as long, as possible. One high-quality garment can help to reduce the number of garments produced per person.

Chemicals

Using chemical treatments to give a garment particular properties may sound like an unpleasant process, perhaps even one that is best avoided. However, when the garment in question has to protect the wearer against dangers like heat, flames or chemical splashes, we have to take a slightly different

Certifications

We at Blåkläder are dedicated to always making our operations a bit more sustainable, step by step, day by day. However, becoming a fully sustainable company doesn’t happen overnight, as nowadays sustainable workwear is about much more than just the quality of the garments.
